IAO and UWO Receive Grant for Inclusive Education Advocacy

Inclusion Action in Ontario is thrilled to announce its partnership with the University of Western Ontario’s Canadian Research Centre on Inclusive Education Director, Jacqueline Specht. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has granted us funding to develop learning modules to support parents advocating for inclusive education. Our proposal ranked in the top 5% of applicants! We know our work is important, and now we know others think so too!

We recently received ethics approval and are ready to recruit families to participate in this work. We’re looking for families whose children access special education services for disability related reasons. We want to interview parents to learn about their advocacy related needs. From there we will develop online modules to support families in their quest for inclusive schools.

To learn more about participating, please contact Professor Specht at jspecht@uwo.ca. And please share this information widely in your networks!

Ontario’s highest court affirms right to participate in hearing for man with Down Syndrome

“Inclusion Action in Ontario (IAO) reports on a significant Court of Appeal decision affirming the rights of an adult with Down Syndrome to participate in decisions about his living arrangements. The Court emphasized the necessity for individuals with developmental disabilities to have their voices respected, challenging assumptions of incapacity. This aligns with IAO’s advocacy efforts, including the ‘My Home, My Way’ series, promoting independent living for those with complex needs. The decision marks a crucial step forward in the fight for autonomy and dignity for adults with developmental disabilities.”
