YA, BUTs

What are YA, BUTs?

We at Inclusion Action in Ontario are gathering your YA, BUTs — statements we might hear from our kids’ teachers, school and board administrators, professionals – perhaps even some family and community members – that discourage truly inclusive education.

Why do we want your YA, BUTs?

Because IAO can turn those ‘YA BUTS’ excuses into ‘YES … AND’ solutions: challenging ableist assumptions and promoting effective inclusive education.

Perhaps someone said that inclusion won’t “work” for your child and you knew they were wrong but didn’t know how to respond.

Or did you know what to say, but felt they didn’t listen, perhaps because you were “just” a parent?

We want to know these statements that you have been told so that we can use them to help and advocate for our students.

How will these YA, BUTs help families and students?

The responses gathered will be given to researchers who will then use them to create quick answers to families for families to have ready when they are in told a YA, BUT.

Responses will be given to Inclusive Education Canada associates who will then provide short responses that are based on research evidence.

We want you to know that there is a network of allies “out there” among researchers and academics, and that those allies will be sharing information with us that will support our advocacy.

How to send your YA BUTs

Please send your responses to Marilyn Dolmage and she will be in touch with you (inclusion@sympatico.ca).
